The Central Regional Resource Center for Behavioural and Emotional Difficulties (MKA)
Trondheim, Norway.

MKA is a private organized special– and sociopedagogical center on matters concerning the education of children and young people with behavioural and emotional difficulties. We offer our services to preschools, schools, educational and psychological services and residential care units. Our main work is to train the staff and together with them develop and implement strategies and practicies to improve the childrens social and educational development.

We are located in Trondheim and consist of three specialists in the field of education and social studies: Arne Tveit (arne@mka.no), Arnt Ollestad (arnt@mka.no) and Bjørn Arnesen (bjorn@mka.no) Our main workload is directed to the central region of Norway and we collaborate with different professional environments in the region and nationwide.  In the following we present major areas and topics we are involved in:
  • Multisystemic approach : Carolyn Webster-Stratton from Seattle,USA, has developed four programmes within the same framework directed towards young children with conduct and behaviour problems. The program is called The Incredible years Training series for Parents, Techers and Children(www.incredibleyears.com).    The Department of Health in Norway has in collaboration with the Universities in Trondheim and Tromsø conducted  a replication study of the children and parent program.  The results from the study will be presented in 2006. The main objective of the study is to see if the positive results that have been made in the family and children programme in the US can be replicated here in Norway. Webster- Strattons teacher programme  has been tried out in parts of the country, mainly in the Trondheim and Tromsø region.  We in MKA have been involved since 2001 in trying out and implimenting the Webster- Stratton Teacher training programme . A greater  research study on the outcome and consequences from using the teacher programme  will be carried out from 2007. The staff of MKA are all certified group leaders in the Parent program as well as the Teacher program and Arne Tveit and Bjørn Arnsen are mentors in the Teacher program and are working at implementing the program across the country.
  • A translation of an article on praise published i Spesialpedagogikk (Spec-ed journal) nr 10/2009 click here
  • Inclusive education for children under care: Another field we have been oriented towards is the challenges connected to the education of children under care within an inclusive environment. We have participated in and evaluated different projects within this field and also published articles and papers (click here).
  • Alternative education: An additional question that concerns us is the development of alternative educational settings and how mainstream schools , both elementary and secondary, can import ideas and be influenced by these alternative schools. We have participated at conferences and published articles and papers (click here) on these issues too.
  • Guidance and consultancy: We also do a great deal of professional guidance and have since 1997 been working at adopting Adrian Wards (adrian.ward@uea.ac.uk) framework for “Opportunity led work” See article (http://www.uea.ac.uk/swk/people/faculty/AW.htm)  into a Norwegian and mainly educational context. We call it ”Decision oriented guidance” and have introduced this method to a number of schools and institutions in the region.  See articles and presentation.

  • International cooperation: The European Project for Ethnic & Cultural Equality (EUROPEACE) is a network of 6 projects from the UK, The Netherlands, Slovakia, Serbia , Norway and Bulgaria. MKA  is the Norwegian partner.www.europeace.org.uk The purpose is to develop a multi agency partnership framework to develop and implement innovative methods of youth work and of the international co-operation, training and information related to it. The Europeace project recognises that society is weaker and more prone to conflict, social tensions and violent exclusion if discrimination goes unchallenged. .The focus: discrimination and the violence which often results from it.A parallel aim is to establish meaningful  internet cooperation  and informal exchange of information.
